Language Teaching Tomorrow – Track 4

The author is a student who worked as a host for Language Teaching Tomorrow 2019 international week.

The track 4 gathered plenty of people to talk over and discuss over the topics and issues given by the presentations and workshops. Through out the day the crowd changed as fresh faces showed up to see different presentations.

The day got kicked off by Fumiko Inoue, Ina Tjandrakesuma and Jing Cai from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences who gave a presentation on “Project-based Learning in Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese Language Education”. The presentation gave good insight about what kind of language education should be taught for people who are thinking about working in Asia in their near future. The gist of the presentation centered around the idea that perhaps the best way to prepare someone for working abroad is to teach them valid communication skills rather than focusing too much on the correct use of language and grammar rules. Since if you can handle the casual communication with a languange you have good changes of acquiring an internship or a job. While this presentation focused on the Asian job markets, the idea can certainly be used for other countries as well. The presentation ended with a little crowd involvement with matters concerning the current state of the language teaching as well as different methods used to promote it.

Jing Cai talking about International Business in Asia

The second presentation was given by Tanja Psonder from Austria’s FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences. The topic of the presentation was “Comics as a New Genre in Academic Communication”. This was an interesting take on how to use visualization as a tool in education. The presenter Tanja had devised this idea to help teach her architecture graduates, but surely it could be used for other fields as well. When using both non-fictional comics as well as written word the message could be passed on more clearer and this is what I personally gathered from the presentation which was delightfully delivered by Tanja.

Tanja Psonder beginning her presentation

The third event of the day was presented by TAMK’s own Henri Annala who held a round-table discussion on “KIVAKO Project – Developing Nationwide Learning Paths for Languages”. The project in question covers all Finland’s higher education institutions and is aimed at enhancing the education of other languages than Finnish, Swedish and English. The goal of the project is to start utilizing modern tools in language education, this means creating apps for smart phones and using the already existing software in the internet to do tandem learning. After Henri explained the KIVAKO project the room was “unleashed” to discuss the many aspects about the project and also to give examples if they had similar kind of projects going on in their own countries. The room was filled with conversations and good feedback was given to Henri’s questions, all in all it fare to say that this roundtabe discussion was a success and a joy to follow.

Henri Annala interacting with the crowd

The last presentation of the day was given by TAMK’s Marianna Leikomaa and Henri Annala and it was about “International Course Collaboration – Introducing New Partners”. The presentation focused on how to find new partner universities for different courses. Since Henri and Marianna had to find new partner for one of their courses themselves in the past year in a quite short notice, they had a keen insight on this topic and spoke about their personal experience. This presentation tackled some of the ups and downs that one might have when collaborating with outside partners during an online course. The presentation was concluded with questions and feedback and I’m certain that all the interested parties got a good undestanding about how to proceed if they happen to be faced with a similar problem like Henri and Marianna.

All in all the day was very interesting to say the least, it was very intriguing to see language professionals from different places to exhange their ideas and opinions.

Language Teaching Tomorrow 2019 – Track 1 workshops

The author is a student who worked as a host for Language Teaching Tomorrow 2019 international week.

Track 1 workshops were well received with the audience providing plenty of engagement with the speakers and the conversation continuing on after the talks. The focus seemed to be on teachers and staff and their; confidence and motivation in language classes, extent of understanding different fields of study and their relevance in the classroom, and the continued need for language teachers especially in language specialization (Business, Law, Engineering, etc.). These were all topics of great discussion, particularly the range of experiences from country to country and when it came to institution budgets.

Susanne Kirchmeyer kicked us off introducing Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in Germany which has an increasingly large international student presence. The struggle is inherent here with the majority of Int. students having no German language skills and many of the older administrative personnel, as well as the Weimar community, having limited or no English language skills. There was particular interest into the networking across faculties by the language department as well as the expanding scope of the department into non-university faculties like student housing and local immigration.

From The Hague University of Applied Sciences Netherlands, Marleen Berkhout and Paula Hulsbosch brought an energetic introduction to their work which aims to prepare students for their future career in international settings. One topic of interest were for teachers to have a broad understanding of, for example business, so to better help reinforce specialized language skills in their field. Independent study and contact with alumni were helpful pointers. Another topic was field trips hosted entirely in the teaching language. These would be held in a place of interest relevant to the studied language and funded partly by an independent fund, the school and the students.

The strong theme of staff motivation was continued in the ‘round-table’ discussion spearheaded by Ms. Dorka Balogh from the Pázmány Péter Catcholic University, Hungary. Teachers shared experiences and ideas about knowledge sharing across faculties, professional language teaching and specialization, content methodology, and dealing with stress and burnouts and its prevention among other topics. The session was left with a pressing question: to what degree must professional language teachers understand/ have knowledge of their students’ field of study and how will the fusion of professional language studies and professional studies impact language specialization?

The final presentation was given by Ms. Sofie Verstraete from the Artevelde University College Ghent, Belgium and introduced a very practical guide to the way students are supported in developing their bachelor papers. With respect to language, Ms. Verstraete tells that bachelor papers’ quality is suffering for many reasons, one of which stems from the limited capacity of coaches to guide students in this way, because of workloads (especially). The logistical problem of addressing thousands of students’ papers by hundreds of teachers was a main driver for creating the language coach position. A template to guide thesis writing, an Academic Writing Assistant (website), and personal guidance were some of the practical tools given to students.

Overall the day’s events seemed fruitful and full of proactive discussion from all involved. It was particularly interesting for me, having gone through several Finnish language courses, to hear from the teachers’ perspective inside the classroom and to understand their difficulties and energy spent outside of the classroom.

First time to be a host

The author is a student who worked as a host for Language Teaching Tomorrow 2019 international week.

On the thursday, 16th of may, i was one of the host at tamk for the international language meeting. It is my first time to be a host and i appreciated that i was gave a chance, and luckly, everything went well except some small problems with the computer.

At begainning, i am excited that i could arrange the whole process and introduce the speechers of every topic, especially when i enjoying the music( in the shadow, finnish song) show at around 8 : 30 for welcoming the guests from all over the world. After 30 minutes, Ms. Mira Grönvall gave the speech, work life simulation as a learning platform but i am not there. Then, was  the coffee break. My time was started at 10 : 30, i told them that is my first time to host such a excellent meeting and i felt nervous after i roughly introduced my name and some basic information about me, the next, i threw the topic         ( brief introduction to Finnish language) out and challenged myself by spoke the finnish name with R sound, i got appload and encourage from the speecher and the guests though my prounciation not well, i knew. For this lecture, it last for 90 minutes and everyone was took part in positively and really enjoyed themselves within group members while they talking with each other and tought finnish. And the second is a workshop, Are your students interculturally competent and it shows well, as well as the third speech, teaching foreign languaes in a multicultural environment, a communicative approach.

Everyone have to experience many first time in any form, for me at the tamk to host the process, i think it is a good begainning to start my vivid life.

Kurssin nimi: Communication and Languages in a Multicultural Workplace, 2-5 op

  • Moduuli 2: How to organize a project? 2 op

Projektityöskentely on nykyään hyvin yleistä. Tässä moduulissa kehität projektityöskentelytaitojasi toteuttamalla pienimuotoisen projektin monikulttuurisessa ja -kielisessä pienryhmässä.

  • Moduuli 3: How to analyse workplace communication? 1 op

Saitko kesätyöpaikan tai työskenteletkö jo valmiiksi monikulttuurisessa työpaikassa? Jatka osaamisesi kehittämistä reflektoimalla ja analysoimalla monikulttuurisen ja -kielisen työpaikkasi vuorovaikutusta, omaa vuorovaikutusosaamistasi ja kielitaitoasi.
